QUAIL MADNESS.

Welcome to QuailMadness, Thankyou for taking your time to come & visit us here...We have 4 different types of quails here…Our 1st breed are the Japanese quail these are also known as Italians & corturnix these come in different colours & that’s why they are known in a few different names,We have 60females & 12 males in this flock…Our 2nd breed are Celadons, they are the same size & colour as our Japs/Italians/Cortunix the only difference is they carry the blue egg gene & lay blue eggs, their eggs are the same size as the Japs/Italians/Cortunix,We don’t have a large amount of this breed in our flock, we have 25females & 5males in this flock…Our 3rd breed is our Jumbo quails they look the same as most of our Japanese/Italians/Cortunix flock as they have the same colours but the only difference is their size, they are slightly taller, heavier & Fatter & they also lay bigger eggs,We have 30females & 5males In this flock..Our 4th breed are the Chinese painted these are also known as the button quail or the king quails, these are much smaller than the Japanese/Celadon breeds I would say just over half a size smaller but they can live happily with the Jumbo,Japanese & celadons if their aviary is big enough so that the little ones can hide,we have 25females & 5males in this flock…Our quail egg sales & hatching season starts from the beginning of March but this all depends when our quails start mating & laying fertile eggs again & our season ends around the end of September/beginning of October this is also weather dependant…We hatch our own eggs every 2-6weeks depending on how many chicks we have left that need homes & how many people we have waiting for chicks/sexed quails…Our Chinese Painted quails live indoors, we have a big cage for the darker ones & a bit smaller cage for the lighter ones so this breed tend to lay eggs all year round due to having light for around 14hrs per day & room temperature 24 7. We have  the Japanese/Jumbos & Celadons living outside in coops & they also have hutches full of hay/sawdust/food & water,we shut them into their hutches at night to keep them safe from predators, they are tended to several times per day,at 7am they are let out of their hutches into the aviary/coop & are given fresh food & water, they are then checked & given a food top up,fresh water if needed at 10am,1pm & 4pm,at 6pm we collect all of their eggs & top up their food & water before putting them to bed Into their hutches,In the lighter evenings we go & Collect their eggs at 7pm then at 9pm we shut them into their hutches & we top up their food & add fresh water, they have access to their hutches all day so they can get into rest/lay down & lay eggs in the hay & sawdust, they also have other nesting boxes full of hay where they can go into lay down, they are all fed a very healthy diet of organic mixed corn & organic layers pellets which they have access to eat 24 7,for breakfast every morning they are given dried mealworms which they absolutely love & they are also given iceberg lettuce at the same time which they also love, they also love to forage naturally for garden worms & caterpillars in their aviary/coop,they also have oystershell grit scattered over the ground of their aviary/coop to eat as required as this helps them grind up & digest their food properly & it also ensures the females eggshells are nice & hard, they also enjoy digging about in it & catching little bugs to enrich their diet…The quails all of the adore sand baths & will sun bathe whilst lying in it,we use play sand in big plastic boxes for them to dig about & play in.Now about the eggs, our females usually start to lay their first eggs at 7-10 wks old & some have been known to lay their first egg at 6wks old but some have laid as late as 15-20wks old this all depends on the quails mood/housing/weather & temperature, their first 5-10 eggs are always a different size/shape & colour, the eggs can be soft without a shell but this is normal as the female is just settling herself into egg production, females will lay eggs with or without a male in the flock but for a female to produce fertile eggs she needs a male to cover her but once she has finally sorted her egg laying production out then she’s all set,It can take about 10-20 after her first egg for her eggs to become fertile some maybe longer generally about 2-4wks after shes laid her 1st egg…During the winter months or from the end of September - March 95per cent of females won’t lay eggs but this depends on the females mood/housing & the weather but if they live indoors or in a warm shed then they will probably continue to lay all year sometimes through October-March if indoors the eggs maybe hit & miss,if you wish for your males to mate & your females to lay eggs all through the colder/winter months then the quails would need heat 24hrs a day 7 days a week & lights for about 14-16hrs per day but I like to give my birds a rest over the colder/winter months…If you wish to hatch your own chicks from your/Our eggs then you will need to incubate them as quails aren't generally broody & will not sit on or hatch their own eggs like chickens do,we have fresh eggs laid every late afternoon & evening & sometimes some will lay over night so we always have plenty of fresh eggs & our fertility rates our excellent,every 2wks we collect a 2 days worth of eggs & open them up to check the fertility,we have had excellent hatches from our own eggs & we normally hatch every 2-6wks & we receive great feedback from people who have bought our eggs…You can eat quail eggs fertile or not they all taste great either way & being fertile doesn't affect their flavour, there is more calcium in a quails egg than In a chickens egg, dogs can also eat them they tend to love them & the shell aswell as they taste nice & there is calcium in the shell which is good for dogs…If you would like to purchase any hatching or eating eggs you are welcome to visit by appointment & see our adult & baby quails (if we have baby quails at that time) you can even hold them if you like…We generally hatch our own quails from March/April & this will be the first hatch of the year & the last hatch is generally in Septembe, all of our hatched quails are ready to go to new homes at 1wk old, leaving at 1wk old means they will be unsexed, some of our baby quails that have markings on their chests can be sexed from 3-6wks old but our plain chested baby quails can only be vent sexed from 8-12wks old…All baby quails will require a heatlamp or an electric heatplate from newly hatched they are 4wks old,In the hotter months till 3wks old then they live at room temperature till they are 6-8wks of till it’s suitable weather outside to live & they can live in a rabbit hutch with a run underneath or a separate run or they can be housed in a chicken coop or something similar or they can live indoors permanently in an indoor cage/hutch or rodent tank…They eat chick starter crumb from 24hrs old till they are 8wks old but from 6wks old we add some mixed corn & some layers pellets into the crumb,we add more of these each day & less crumb each day so that by 8wks old they will be fully weaned off the crumb, but if you still have crumb to use up after 8wks old then it’s fine for them to keep eating it along with the mixed corn & pellets till it’s all used up unless your going to hatch more chicks so then save it for them. For chicks water bowl you can just use a coffee jar lid or any lids like that for the water for chicks from 24hrs old till they are 1 or 2weeks old as if it’s to deep the chicks can fall in & drown but from 1 or 2wks old depending of chicks sizes you can use any plastic container like a takeaway container for the water & for food from 24hrs old you can use any type of plastic container again or you can buy the proper feeders & waters from online like Amazon or eBay & Mole Valley Farmers.Food is Chick Starter Crumb,Chicken Mixed Corn,Layers Pellets,Oystershell Grit this can all be brought online from Amazon or EBay & at Mole Valley Farmers…Bedding is Sawdust or off & fluffed up which is normally 24hrs-36hrs old then your welcome to come & take them straight away from 36hrs old but we will require a none refundable deposit of half 24hrs before we set the eggs into our incubator, please see our shop section on quails hatched to order for prices, this is subject to availability EG one of our incubators is empty & enough room to fit the required amount of eggs…You will also find in the shop section an album titled our flock, these are most of our adult flocks that the eggs & babies come from.Eggs brought for eating are also in the shop section…Please
